Joe Burrow had one of the biggest performances of his career in the Week 9 Raiders vs Bengals matchup on Sunday, throwing for five touchdowns in his team’s first home win this season. With bad beats week after week, the Las Vegas Raiders desperately need a break to figure out how to overcome their struggles all season.
Two of Burrow’s touchdowns were to tight end Gesicki, who caught five of his six targets. Running back Chase Brown also contributed significantly and rushed for 120 yards and also caught a receiving touchdown. On the defensive end, Trey Hendrickson was a standout, recording four sacks and continuously pressuring Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew.
The Raiders struggled to find consistency on both sides of the ball. While Jakobi Meyers provided a bright spot with his reliable receiving, the team failed to generate momentum offensively. Defensively, they had difficulty containing Cincinnati’s varied offensive threats. Injuries also compounded the Raiders’ challenges, leaving them searching for answers as they move forward halfway into the season.
Raiders vs Bengals Week 9 | 2024 Season Highlights
Down multiple possessions, Raiders Coach Antonio Pierce benched Minshew late in the third quarter. The veteran QB finished with 124 yards on 10 for 17 passing. Former University of Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder was swapped in and eventually fumbled the ball on a strip sack in the fourth quarter. According to Coach Pierce, Minshew was benched in an attempt to ignite the offense rather than because of the blowout
“Today wasn’t a good day at the office,” said Pierce. “We’ve got the bye week to reset, and when I say everything, it’s everything. That wasn’t a good enough effort.”
Ridder found rookie tight end Brock Bowers at the end of the second half for a 22 yard touchdown. Too little too late, the Raiders lost 41-21 at Paycor Stadium.
The Bengals victory highlighted their ability to perform as a cohesive unit, with contributions from their offense, defense, and special teams. For the Raiders, this game underscored the need to address both injuries and strategic adjustments to remain competitive as the season progresses.
Following the Week 10 bye, the Las Vegas Raiders will matchup against the Miami Dolphins in Week 11 on Sunday, November 17.
