Losing 18-24, the Raiders vs Broncos game at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium left the Raiders down on the count with a 2-3 record. Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II collected two interceptions that changed the tides of the game with one that went for a 100-yard touchdown. Surtain’s second pick set up a scoring drive that allowed Denver to overcome an eight game losing streak to the Silver and Black.
Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew II put his team up early on with a huge 57-yard touchdown play to rookie tight end Brock Bowers. Kicker Daniel Carlson followed up with a 40-yard field goal to finish off the first quarter, but Denver quickly responded with five scoring drives to add 34 points to the board.
Surtain’s pick off on Minshew occurred in the middle of the second quarter on a 1st & goal where the Raiders QB threw in the direction of Bowers at the goal line. Surtain then ran 100 yards to the house as fans at Empower Field roared. Minshew had a perfect game prior to the play, completing his first nine passes for 115 yards. Unfortunately the pendulum stayed in Denver’s direction as Minshew couldn’t bounce back from the devastating play.

“It definitely swung the game,” said Minshew. “And obviously I can’t do that to our team, put us in a bad spot. That swing was definitely on me. I thought we got off to a good start, and then I killed our momentum with the pick six.”
Broncos kicker Will Lutz topped off the first half with a 44-yard field goal. After the break, the Raiders gave up three touchdowns in the second half. Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix found receiver Jaleel McLaughlin for a 4-yard touchdown. Nix himself rushed a 1-yarder into the end zone early in the fourth, then passed to receiver Josh Reynolds on their next possession for a 9-yard TD.
Minshew was replaced by backup QB Aidan O’ Connell, who went 10 for 20 with 94 passing yards. Raiders running back Ameer Abdullah found the end zone late in the fourth quarter with a 3-yard rush. Abdullah led all Raiders running backs with 42 yards on five carries, while Alexander Mattison rushed for 38 yards on 15 carries.
In a crushing defeat, the Raiders will look to bounce back in Week 6 as they host the Pittsburgh Steelers back home at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, October 13.
